How to create a denim brand in 10 weeks?

Candiani Denim renewed its commitment to being a contributor and sponsor of the Denim Innovation project of Ravensbourne University London. Fifteen groups of 2nd-year students of Bachelor of Arts in design and branding were tasked with creating a denim brand in 10 weeks. The Transformers Foundation, supporting the project since 2019, was the key sponsor of this 8th edition.

The Denim Innovation project of Ravensbourne University London concerns innovation, craft, and authenticity in the denim industry. Its 8th edition focused mainly on sustainability, and all the sponsoring mills, Candiani Denim included, provided students with their most sustainable fabrics.


Each group was partnered with one denim mill at the beginning of the project and had to create a denim brand from concept to finished products and branding, defining all its features and manufacturing garments. What makes Ravensbourne’s project special is that the students involved have the chance to cover all the details of a denim brand and understand what creating a brand really means. They learn every stage and tell a 10-week-long story.


The winners were announced on January 25, 2023, when all the groups presented their collections. Two groups, Ansa and Rebel, used our fabric. You can watch what happened during the judging event here:




The denim industry experts mentored Ravensbourne’s students


Four experienced mentors from the denim industry supported the students during the project: Mohsin Sajid, a fashion designer who specialized in consultancy activities for some of the primary global manufacturers and brands in the industry; Jessica Gebhart, founder of the British brand I AND ME, who aims to promote a slow, regenerative fashion; Leanne Jae, an experienced fashion designer who specialized in sustainable denim; Sue Barrett, a creative strategist and consultant for some of the main global brands who has long experience in the denim and forecasting industry.
