ReGen is the fabric created by Candiani Denim for its 80th anniversary. ReGen contains 50% recycled cotton and 50% TENCEL™ x REFIBRA™ fibers, produced by Lenzing. The fabric won the ITMA Sustainable Innovation Award 2019.
ReGen is sustainable denim made with recycled cotton
A lot of water is needed in the jean-making process: 2,565 liters are needed to grow cotton and 236 to produce the fabric, according to The Life Cycle of a Jean. The ReGen material was designed to reduce these figures and give regenerated fibers new life as premium denim. ReGen is sustainable denim based on four pillars: materials made with recycled cotton and TENCEL™ x REFIBRA™ and Indigo Juice® and Kitotex® technologies used to dye and size.
Recycled cotton mixes with TENCEL™ x REFIBRA™
ReGen is made with 50% recycled cotton and 50% TENCEL™ x REFIBRA™ fibers. Recycled cotton originates from Candiani Denim’s industrial waste. TENCEL™ x REFIBRA™ is a cellulose fiber produced by Lenzing that combines recycled materials, such as cotton and wood leftovers from clothing production. The ReGen fabric is characterized by the presence of regenerated threads in both the warp and the weft, and by the total absence of fresh, raw cotton throughout its manufacturing process. ReGen is a perfect example of pre-consumer recycling.

How to dye jeans in a more sustainable way?
Indigo Juice® and Kitotex® technologies are used to dye and size ReGen jeans in a more sustainable way. Indigo Juice® is a dyeing technology that keeps indigo very superficial on yarns. So, indigo can be washed away using less water, energy, and fewer chemicals. Kitotex® is a patented technology that uses a biodegradable, antibacterial substance to completely replace polyvinyl alcohol and other harmful chemicals traditionally used in the dyeing and finishing stages.
Based on our internal measurement system, which assesses the environmental benefits of using Indigo Juice® and Kitotex® on 100% cotton indigo fabric with a commonly used vintage wash, we found that producing and washing a pair of jeans can save up to 75% of water and 65% of chemicals compared to conventional denim. This significantly reduces the environmental impact associated with denim production. This data specifically refers to this fabric and this garment finishing treatment.
