Chino pants were also born for the British Army, but date back to around 1840 when soldiers in India wore a version dyed khaki with spices and coffee. However, the term “chino” comes from the Philippines, where U.S. soldiers picked up this fit during the Spanish-American War, as these garments were usually made with a 100% cotton twill imported from China. Such as cargo pants, chinos transitioned from military gear to civilian wear after the war, when surplus military clothing became trendy, making them a staple for preppy styles in the 1950s and 60s.


Today, chinos come in various styles and materials. They’re especially popular in the summer because they are often made of lightweight cotton, but they work year-round. Chinos are usually slim-fitting and have a partially concealed back pocket, offering comfort and style for any occasion.
