For its 50th anniversary, Sportswear International has released an exclusive coffee-table book, which recently debuted in Milan alongside a series of special events. We were thrilled to host the book launch party at our store during the latest edition of Denim by PV. It was a wonderful occasion to celebrate Sportswear International’s milestone birthday with friends from around the globe!

What’s Sportswear International?

Sportswear International was founded by Peter Schindler in Germany in 1975. Starting from Ratingen, where one of its first offices was located, it expanded globally to cities such as Milan, New York, and São Paulo. The magazine and media brand gained a reputation for capturing the spirit of its time through elaborate, innovative photo shoots and engaging reporting.

Before the concepts of the Global Village or the Internet emerged, Sportswear International explored modern global culture, subcultures, and youth communities. It immersed itself in nightlife, documenting the club scenes of major cities including New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris, Milan, and Rimini.

The magazine was also famous for delving into the relationship between fashion and art. Notably, in 1980, Schindler convinced Andy Warhol to design its cover, and several years later, graffiti artist Keith Haring contributed as well. In the early 1990s, the magazine was acquired by DFV Media Group, the same publishing house that owns The SPIN OFF, Fashion Magazine, and Textil Wirtschaft.

“Sportswear International 50th Anniversary Edition”

The “Sportswear International 50th Anniversary Edition” continues to narrate the magazine’s story by focusing on two key themes that define contemporary society: jeans and sportswear. Denim serves as a versatile and democratic canvas for self-expression, embodying luxury, sexiness, gender fluidity, and various styles ranging from essential to exaggerated. Meanwhile, sportswear and outdoor fashion have never been trendier.

This special 164-page coffee-table book, published by Sportswear International, explores the evolution of these markets and their future directions through interviews and stories that connect the past, present, and future. This edition is designed for industry professionals and denim enthusiasts alike, making it a valuable collectible and a memorable souvenir.

Launch and distribution

The “Sportswear International 50th Anniversary Edition” was celebrated during Denim by PV in Milan in November 2025, featuring a series of events and parties throughout the city that hosted personalities featured in the book. An exclusive launch party was also held at our Candiani Denim Store.

The book will be distributed at major international trade shows, including Denim by PV, Milano Unica, Munich Fabric Start, Pitti Uomo, and Premiere Vision. It will also reach readers and subscribers of TextilWirtschaft in Germany, Fashion Magazine in Italy, and The SPIN OFF worldwide.
