The denim project at Kingston University London is a two-month initiative involving master’s fashion students. It is led by denim expert Mohsin Sajid and is divided into two modules: design and production. We are proud to sponsor this project by providing students with our denim fabrics, enabling them to create stunning outfits. Last year was no exception!

First module: design

The first part of the Kingston University denim project focuses on design. Collaboration is crucial in this module, as teamwork is essential for future fashion designers. The project simulates a real-life professional environment, allowing students to learn how to cooperate effectively with team members, delegate responsibilities, and lead others.

Students are introduced to the historical and socio-cultural factors surrounding denim, including its origins as workwear, its association with rebellious 20th-century subcultures, and its evolution into a luxury fashion item. They also explore the environmental impact of denim, evaluate eco-friendly alternatives, and consider the potential of innovative design and finishing treatments. Denim is one of the most versatile fabrics, consistently updated, elevated, and reimagined each season. To foster innovation, designers must be knowledgeable about every aspect of denim.

Each team comprises four designers and makers, aiming to create a new denim brand. The process begins with research on the denim market. Students design various individual garments, which the group then combines into one or two cohesive outfit ensembles, in consultation with their design tutor. Each member contributes their own garment, ensuring that the overall design demonstrates creativity and innovation while also reflecting commercial awareness.

Second module: production

The second module of the Kingston University denim project focuses on developing students’ practical fashion skills. It begins with a 3D design of the garment intended for production. Students create samples using real fabrics to demonstrate and assess the suitability of their fabric choices.

The project is supported by denim mills, including Candiani, as well as suppliers and manufacturers of hardware and trims. This allows students to collaborate directly with key players in the fashion industry and gain firsthand experience of how the sector operates.

Four teams utilized our denim fabrics to produce their impressive creations. Here is a gallery showcasing the outcomes.
